Stand Up Pouch Filling and Sealing

How do I open and fill a stand-up bag?

3 Simple & Easy Steps:

  1. Open the pouch from the top by pulling apart the zipper
  2. Fill bag with desired contents
  3. Reseal the zip lock closure

That’s it!

The pouch can now be heat sealed above the zip lock closure for an airtight, tamper evident seal.

How do I heat seal a stand up bag?

Heat sealing the bags give your customers the ultimate satisfaction that their product is safe and the assurance that their product is fresh and had never been opened. However, keep in mind, not all stand-up bags are heat-sealable. The bags must have a heat-sealable laminate interior for this process to work. All Copious Bags® products can be heat sealed

What Do I Need?

  • Stand up bags of your choice
  • A flat smooth work surface
  • A manual heat sealing machine (or check out our ‘Can I use a flat iron or a household iron to seal a stand-up pouch?’ page.

Simple & Easy Steps:

  1. Set the machine to a lower setting and adjust higher if needed*.
  2. Fill the bag with desired contents (avoid getting any product into zipper area and do not over fill the bag).
  3. Gently run your fingers across the zipper to close the bag securely.
  4. Place the top of the filled bag between the seal bars, just “above the tear notches’.
  5. Press down gently for approximately 2-3 seconds and release.

That’s it! …the pouch now has a finished, tamper-evident seal.

Please Note:

*If the bag does not seal properly, begin to slowly adjust the temperature higher until a complete seal is achieved.

**Heat sealing is an optional feature and is not required to use Copious Bags® stand up pouches as they all have a reclosable zip lock closure. To seal a large quantity of bags, it is recommended to use a commercial impulse sealer.

How do I open the pouch after it’s been heat sealed?

All of Copious Bags® pouches have convenient tear notches on either side of the pouch (above the zipper) for super easy opening. At the tear notch, simply tear straight across to open the bag. Then pull the zipper closure apart for access to the content, and then re-zip the bag for reuse.

Can I package oily or wet products in Copious Bag® stand up pouches?

This is a tricky question. The answer is yes and no; kraft stand up bags can package oily and wet products. However, they are not specifically designed to handle water and are not waterproof. Our Kraft Stand Up Bags are constructed with an outer layer of uncoated, natural kraft paper. Paper in and of itself is not waterproof, so when oil or water comes in contact, the bags will stain.

We all know this. So how is it that so many products such as bath salts, body creams, scrubs, and many other high oil content products are packaged in these kraft bags with no oil or water stains evident? It all comes down to how careful you are handling and filling the bags.

Three things to keep in mind when packaging oily and wet products (in kraft pouches):

  • The bag’s outer layer is uncoated, natural paper (oil & water on paper will stain).
  • Oil or water in the zipper line will not allow the bag to close securely, causing leakage.
  • The bags are not specifically designed to handle 100% liquid products.
  • Bags made with a layer of aluminum foil offer the best barrier protection.

If you require a stand-up bag that is airtight and waterproof, our LuxeFrost™ or  LoPro™ Collections are your best option. They are ideal for products that are stored and used in the bath and kitchen. In addition, they are perfect for bath scrubs, bath salts, herbs, spices, and other specialty items you want to keep dry and free from moisture.

How do I expand the bottom gusset so that the pouch stands on its own?

To open and expand the bottom gusset of our 4 and 8 oz stand up bag can be done by hand. Simply open the zipper and slip your hand into the bag and carefully rotate your hand inside. Allow your fingers to begin expanding the interior of the bag until it stands on its own.

For the smaller 1 and 2 oz sized bags, open the zipper and use your fingers to begin expanding the bag. You may then need to insert an smooth object such as a wooden spoon to rotate inside until the bag is fully expanded.
